At Wellfield Junior School we care, learn and succeed together

School clubs

Our choir meets every Thursday in the school hall. It is a joint choir between Wellfield Infant School and Wellfield Junior School. The choir is led by Mrs Fairclough (Deputy Headteacher at Wellfield Infant School) and Mrs Spencer (Year 3 teacher and Subject Leader for Music at Wellfield Junior School). The choir regularly performs in local shows and concerts. In recent years the choir has performed at The Bridgewater Hall, Sale Waterside, The Salvation Army, local churches and the Christmas Market in Ashton-on-Mersey Village.

If your child is interested in joining the choir, please contact the school office.

Kitchen Garden Club

At Wellfield Junior School we have allotments on our field where we grow our own vegetables. We then use these delicious vegetables to cook a range of mouth-watering recipes.

WJS Kitchen/Garden Club began life in February 2018. The aim of our club is to educate children about healthy eating and organic, sustainable gardening. We have eight allotment beds in which we grow a variety of vegetables plus six espalier fruit trees which the children planted last spring. Club members are extremely enthusiastic and meet once a week to take part in the upkeep of our allotment and cookery sessions. Additionally, they willingly sacrifice parts of their break times to water our very thirsty allotment area.

Pupils, staff and the kitchen are involved in saving raw fruit such as apple cores, peelings and tea bags for our compost bins. Children are taught to use hand tools safely and effectively and have delighted in putting their skills to good use. Over the years, we have harvested a bumper crop of potatoes, peas, carrots, onions and courgettes which we grew from seed. The children enjoyed cooking simple, tasty recipes in line with our Grow it-Eat it ethos. Allotment Veg Curry was a particular favourite.

Celebrating the end of our first year we invited parents, carers and neighbours to a garden party to sample some of our recipes and to harvest some oddly shaped carrots and whopping courgettes! We produced our own recipe book and sold surplus vegetables after school to raise funds for the club.

The Kitchen/Garden club continues to go from strength to strength and with the addition of two new raised beds we have extra space for growing so Rhubarb and Pumpkins have also been introduced to our garden. In 2019 we  were invited to take part in the Ashton on Mersey Village in Bloom Community project and the children decorated two containers; planting them with  flowers  and vegetables. The children were very proud to see them displayed in our village.

More information about our fabulous Kitchen Garden Club can be found in the Pupil Area of this website.
