Wellfield Junior School

At Wellfield Junior School we care, learn and succeed together

PE and Sport Premium

What is the Sports Premium and purpose of the funding?

The government is providing funding of £150 million per annum to provide new and substantial primary school sport funding. The funding is being jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and will see money going directly to primary school head teachers to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools and head teachers have the freedom to choose how they do this, through consultation with staff, governors and pupils.

Our Vision for PE

We aim for all children at Wellfield Juniors to experience high quality physical education, school sport and physical activity that will create a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle. We want our children to feel confident and ready to participate in physical activity by promoting physical fitness, the progression of key skills, physical development and knowledge of the body in action, experiencing this in a safe, engaging and supportive environment. We aim to give a stimulating, enjoyable and appropriately challenging learning experience where children can work as individuals, in pairs or take part in group activities. During creative and competitive situations they are encouraged to use their improvisation and problem-solving skills which will help them throughout life, not just in PE!

We ensure all pupils experience 2 hours curriculum time P.E per week, alongside a range of extra-curricular sporting activities and a promotion of competitive sports through the Trafford School Sport Partnership. We aim to introduce the children to a variety of sporting activities that allow them to try their hand at sports they may never have tried before allowing them the opportunity to find an activity they may wish to continue into further life. We believe PE and physical activity can be a driving force to help children’s whole lives, not just in a selected PE lessons by developing our children’s physical competence and confidence, team work and social skills. We offer a variety of opportunities for our children to take leadership roles during curriculum time and also by having the opportunity to join the Sports Council, allowing them to take some control of sport within school and prompting the importance of physical activity in fun ways to the rest of the school.
